Welcome back to our Alumni Storytelling series. This week we are honored to feature PersistNashville student, Charisma! We are so proud of her achievements. She graduated from Fisk University debt-free and is now at Tennessee State University obtaining her MSW (Master of Social Work). Charisma’s journey exemplifies the power of perseverance, community support, and self-belief.
What are you most proud of as a college alumni?
As a college alum of Fisk University, I am most proud of the personal growth and resilience I developed during my time there.
Overcoming both academic and personal challenges has shaped me into who I am today. I’m also incredibly proud of continuing my education by pursuing grad school and graduating debt-free, thanks to the scholarships and grants I was fortunate to receive. Achieving milestones like graduating Summa Cum Laude and being recognized for leadership in various campus roles are key points of pride. The lasting connections I made with peers, professors, and mentors continue to inspire my journey beyond college.
Who or what helped you PERSIST through college?
Throughout college, I was fortunate to have a strong support system that helped me persist, especially during challenging times. Persist played a pivotal role with regular check-ins and encouraging texts that kept me motivated. The unwavering support of my family and friends also made a huge difference. “Most importantly, my faith in God provided me with strength and guidance to overcome obstacles.” These combined sources of support helped me stay on track and graduate.
What advice do you have for First Gen Students?
One piece of advice I would give to first-generation college students is, “Embrace every opportunity and never limit yourself. College is a time for exploration and growth, so take advantage of every experience that comes your way.” As a first-gen student, navigating the academic and social aspects of college can be overwhelming, but it’s important to build your professional brand, network with peers and professors, and make meaningful connections. “Don’t be afraid to be yourself—your uniqueness is valuable, and confidence is key. You belong here just as much as anyone else.” I had moments of doubt, but remembering that my perspective was valuable and that I deserved to take up space kept me moving forward. The strength to keep pushing came from believing in myself and knowing my worth.
