Back to Campus: 6 Tips for Being a Good Roommate

Living with someone—whether it’s your best friend or a total stranger—can be one of the best (and sometimes most challenging) parts of campus life. Whether on campus or off campus, good roommates make college more fun, less stressful, and a whole lot more memorable. Here’s how to start the semester on the right foot:

1. Talk About Expectations Early
Within the first week, sit down and talk about cleaning schedules, guests, noise, and sharing stuff. It’s way easier to set boundaries up front than to deal with misunderstandings later.

2. Respect Each Other’s Space
Even if you’re sharing a small room, respect personal space and belongings. Always ask before borrowing something—yes, even snacks.

3. Keep It Clean(ish)
No one’s asking for a sparkling apartment 24/7, but regular tidying helps keep the peace. Make a simple system for chores so it doesn’t all fall on one person.

4. Communicate—Don’t Stew
If something bothers you, bring it up calmly and respectfully. Roommate problems usually get worse when ignored. Be willing to listen, too—it’s a two-way street.

5. Be Mindful of Schedules
Your roommate might have early classes, late-night study sessions, or different work shifts. Use headphones, keep lights low at night, and avoid loud alarms when they’re trying to sleep.

6. Celebrate the Wins Together
Roommates aren’t just people you live with—they can be friends, cheerleaders, and part of your college support system. Celebrate milestones like good grades, birthdays, or surviving midterms.
